Author: Abhilash Kumar

Key Takeaways

  • Google launched Fitbit Edge this week, a premium fitness band priced at around $180, with a replaceable battery.
  • As per Smart Analytics Global (SAG), Wearable 360 service, the basic band and watch market declined 11% YoY in Q2 2026, and we forecast the category to decline 9% in 2026 and 3% in 2027.
  • SAG forecast Fitbit display band shipments to grow 25% YoY in Q4 2026, driven by the launch of Google Fitbit Edge after more than three years and festive demand.
  • Fitbit’s strong brand equity, nostalgic appeal, reputation for health sensor accuracy, and product quality will help Google attract consumers despite the premium pricing.
  • The minimalistic design of Google Fitbit Edge makes it an attractive option for consumers who want health and fitness tracking while continuing to wear their fashionable analog watches.
  • We believe Google Fitbit Edge will help Google grow in the basic band and watch segment in Q4 2026 and 2027. However, the overall segment will continue to decline, primarily due to weakness in the entry-level bands (sub $50) and watches market.

Google 2026 Product Lineup Across All Three Wrist Wearable Sub-Categories

So, Google has recently launched a premium fitness band called the Google Fitbit Edge, and this band is priced at around $180. As per the definitions of Smart Analytics Global, this band falls into the category of “Basic Bands and Watches” of the overall “Wrist Wearable”. With this, Google now has a presence in all three categories with its new launches: Google Pixel Watch 5 in true smartwatches, Google Fitbit Edge in basic bands and watches, and Google Fitbit Air in non-display bands.

Google Fitbit Edge: A Premium Fitness Band at $180

The device is priced at a whopping $180, and Google wants to position it as a premium fitness band. The fitness band is capable of tracking several health metrics, including continuous heart rate tracking and the ability to detect irregular rhythms. It also brings several other premium features from the Pixel Watch line, such as Health Guardian, which proactively flags shifting vitals and tracks changes in insulin resistance.

Some of the features of the Google Fitbit Edge include a skin temperature sensor, an updated GPS chipset that can provide 40% better accuracy for outdoor workouts, and Google’s Gemini AI model powering the Health Coach app. However, it lacks a speaker and microphone.

Basic Band and Watch Market to Decline in 2026 and 2027

We recently published our Q2 2026 wrist wearable report, and as per Smart Analytics Global’s Wearable 360 service, the basic band and watch category declined 11% YoY during the Q2 2026 and is also forecasted to decline for the full years 2026 at 9% YoY and 2027 at 3% YoY.

Can Google Fitbit Edge Help Google Grow Despite the Market Decline?

We believe the Google Fitbit Edge will help Google grow in this segment in both Q4 2026 and 2027. We forecast Fitbit display band shipments to grow 25% YoY in Q4 2026 given a display band from Fitbit is launched after more than 3 years. FYI, the last display band launched by Fitbit was Charge 6 in September 2023. The 25% YoY growth will be driven by new launch as well as festive demand.

But does that necessarily mean that the overall market will grow? No. We still believe that the overall basic band and watch market will decline in 2026 and 2027 because the main decline is coming from entry-level (sub $50) watches and bands from Noise, boAt, Fire-Boltt, and other players operating in the entry-level segment.

Why Premium Fitness Bands Still Have Demand

However, for premium fitness bands like Fitbit and Garmin, there is still demand in the market. We believe the Google Fitbit Edge will be accepted by the audience for multiple reasons.

One reason is the nostalgia associated with Fitbit. Fitbit has significant brand equity in the market, and Google launching a fitness band again under the Fitbit branding will create that nostalgic factor and encourage people to buy this band.

The second factor is Fitbit’s reputation for health sensor accuracy and product quality.

It is also a minimalistic wearable that can be paired with fashionable analog watches because its display is very small. This is unlike basic bands and watches in the entry-level category, which resemble watches but do not offer a full-fledged operating system like Wear OS. Instead, they use a proprietary operating system with some basic functionalities.

Conclusion: Google Can Grow Even as the Overall Segment Declines

the Google Fitbit Edge, at $180, has a premium positioning. However, it will still be liked by people because of the nostalgic factor and their belief in Fitbit’s product quality.

It will help Google grow in the basic band and watch segment in the following quarters, but it will not lead to the overall growth of that segment. Google as a brand will grow, but the overall segment will still decline.
