Google Pixel Watch 5 Focuses on AI and Health
Alongside the Google Pixel 11 series, Google has also launched the Pixel Watch 5 today. At first instance, the Pixel Watch 5 looks more like a software upgrade than a significant hardware upgrade.
The focus this time is on added AI capabilities, new health features and improved GPS accuracy.
On the AI side, Google Gemini on the watch is becoming more proactive rather than simply reactive. Google has also added some basic offline features, including the ability to set a timer and find out information related to a reservation.
New Health Features and Improved GPS
On the health side, the Pixel Watch 5 can detect conditions such as loss of pulse, insulin resistance and provide indications related to blood pressure. The loss-of-pulse detection will launch first in Europe, while the insulin resistance and blood pressure-related features will arrive in September. Google is clear that these features are detections and are not intended to be diagnostic or pre-screening tools.
Another major upgrade is dual-band GPS, which should make location tracking more accurate, particularly in challenging environments.
Modest Hardware Upgrades
On the hardware side, the Pixel Watch 5 comes with a domed Actua 360 display with up to 3,000 nits brightness. Google has also upgraded the battery and claims up to 40 hours of battery life on the 45mm model and 30 hours on the 41mm model.
The watch is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 platform. Google claims that RAM performance is 50% faster, while CPU performance gets a 12% boost, resulting in an overall experience that is 20% smoother.
Pixel Watch 5 Gets More Expensive
Talking about pricing, the Pixel Watch 5 is now $50 more expensive than its predecessor for the 41mm variant, starting at US$399. The 45mm variant is priced at US$429. Pre-orders start today, August 12, with the watch going on sale on August 20, 2026.
For the Stephen Curry Special Edition, pre-orders also start on August 12, but the watch will be available on shelves starting September 3, 2026.
Rising Memory Costs Could Push Smartwatch Prices Higher
At Smart Analytics Global (SAG), we are also observing true smartwatches getting increasingly expensive. This is being driven, in part, by rising memory prices. More AI features on smartwatches require more DRAM on the device, which adds to the overall bill of materials and ultimately pushes up device prices.

As per Smart Analytics Global (SAG) Wearable 360 preliminary estimate, the global true smartwatch market grew 4% YoY in Q2 2026. Google outperformed the overall true smartwatch market, growing 5% YoY during the quarter and reaching a 2% market share. Google ranked among top 10 true smartwatch players but missed top 5.

Pixel Watch 5 Launch May Not Drive Significant Volume Growth
However, given the price increase and the lack of a significant hardware upgrade, we believe Google’s true smartwatch business will continue to grow, but at a slower pace. We expect Google true smartwatch shipments to grow 2.5% YoY in Q3 2026.
For the full year 2026, we forecast Google’s true smartwatch shipments to grow just 0.1% YoY.
AI Makes Pixel Watch Smarter, But Price Could Limit Growth
Overall, the Pixel Watch 5 is more about making the smartwatch smarter rather than fundamentally changing the hardware. Google’s strategy is clearly shifting toward AI and health intelligence, but the higher price could make it harder for the Pixel Watch to accelerate its growth in an increasingly competitive true smartwatch market.
