Camera Continues to be a Key Differentiator
This Tech Day was largely focused on the camera capabilities of smartphones. If I talk about smartphones, consumers prefer camera as one of the key specifications, and that remains one of the key decisive factors while buying a device. MediaTek understands this very well and is going all in to improve the imaging capabilities of smartphones.
Some of the imaging innovations showcased included:
- 18 EV HDR Fusion for extended dynamic range
- 4K 120 Super EIS for smooth cinematic capture
These technologies reflect MediaTek’s growing focus on enhancing smartphone photography and videography experiences.
MediaTek’s Position in the Indian Smartphone Market
Talking about the smartphone market in India, we believe MediaTek holds the dominant share in terms of smartphones shipped every year. However, in the premium segment, Qualcomm still takes the lead, while MediaTek continues to dominate the entry and mid-range segments.
That said, MediaTek is aggressively trying to increase its presence in the premium segment. Devices such as the Vivo X300 Pro, Oppo Find X9s, Moto Edge 70 Pro and Xiaomi 17T are expected to strengthen its position.
Some of the processors powering these devices include:
- Dimensity 9500
- Dimensity 9500S
- Dimensity 8500
Looking Beyond Smartphones
MediaTek is not just focusing on smartphones. If I talk about the current economic scenario as well as the global increase in memory prices impacting the smartphone market, MediaTek is taking cautious steps to expand its dimensions beyond smartphones.
The company is increasingly investing in sectors such as:
- Automotive
- Internet of Things (IoT)
- Robotics
This strategy is also evident from its recent partnership with NVIDIA, highlighting MediaTek’s intent to strengthen its presence across multiple connected-device ecosystems.
OEM Presence Signals More Devices Ahead
During the MediaTek Tech Day, we also witnessed several OEM partners present, including Vivo, Xiaomi, Motorola and Oppo. This gives an indication that MediaTek is likely to launch a few more smartphone devices with these OEM partners in the near future.
Analyst View
In short, MediaTek is on the right path. It has been able to capture the dominant share in the Indian smartphone chipset market because of its aggressive pricing compared to Qualcomm. At the same time, the company is not limiting itself to smartphones and is actively focusing on growing industries such as automotive, IoT and robotics, which should help diversify its business in the coming years.
