Author: Linda Sui

Key Takeaways

  • Global smartphone shipments declined 19% YoY in Q3 2026, according to preliminary estimates from Smart Analytics Global (SAG), amid rising memory costs, smartphone price increases and weakening consumer demand.
  • Samsung strengthened its global leadership, growing shipments 2% YoY and expanding its market share to 24%, up from 19% a year earlier. The Galaxy Z Fold8 and other foldable models contributed to a higher premium product mix, supporting healthy ASP growth.
  • Apple demonstrated resilience, with global shipments declining just 2% YoY while its market share increased to 20% from 17%. Despite the global decline, Apple posted healthy growth in China, driven by solid demand for the iPhone 17 series and the newly launched iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max.
  • Chinese smartphone vendors faced sharper declines, with Xiaomi down 29% YoY, OPPO (including OnePlus and Realme) down 35%, and vivo (including iQOO) down 33%, reflecting their greater exposure to price-sensitive segments.
  • Samsung and Apple collectively captured 44% of global shipments, up from 36% in Q3 2025, highlighting increasing market concentration.

Exhibit 1: Global Smartphone Vendor Market Share and YoY % in Q3 2026

SAG forecasts global smartphone shipments will decline 13% YoY in 2026, with the downturn continuing into 2027.

Meanwhile, growing market concentration could further widen the performance gap between leading vendors and smaller competitors. However, the premiumization trend may also face increasing pressure as continued smartphone price hikes test consumer affordability and willingness to pay in premium segment too.

SAG expects market conditions to improve gradually as component costs stabilize and consumer demand recovers, although a sustained recovery is unlikely before 2028.
